WWF urges Japanese to stop eating endangered bluefin tuna
In March the UN-sponsored Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) rejected a ban on the international trade in Atlantic bluefin tuna, which had been strongly opposed by Japan.
The bluefin’s fate is now in the hands of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT), the inter-governmental group responsible for managing its stocks, which will meet in November.
Last year, the ICCAT agreed to cut its bluefin tuna catch in the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean by 40 percent, to 13,500 tonnes in 2010.
The WWF has strongly criticised the deal, saying that it ignores a key study that found that even a strictly enforced 8,000-tonne quota would spell just a 50 percent chance of the recovery of the species.
Check out some alternatives for bluefin tuna (because you shouldn’t be eating it either) and read more about what YOU can do to help to save this species. Poachers kill last female rhino in South African park for prized horn
South African wildlife experts are calling for urgent action against poachers after the last female rhinoceros in a popular game reserve near Johannesburg bled to death after having its horn hacked off.
Wildlife officials say poaching for the prized horns has now reached an all-time high. “Last year, 129 rhinos were killed for their horns in South Africa. This year, we have already had 136 deaths,” said Japie Mostert, chief game ranger at the 1,500-hectare Krugersdorp game reserve.
The gang used tranquilliser guns and a helicopter to bring down the nine-year-old rhino cow. Her distraught calf was moved to a nearby estate where it was introduced to two other orphaned white rhinos.

UN fears ‘irreversible’ damage to natural environment
The UN warned on Monday that “massive” loss in life-sustaining natural environments was likely to deepen to the point of being irreversible after global targets to cut the decline by this year were missed.
“This report is saying that we are reaching the tipping point where the irreversible damage to the planet is going to be done unless we act urgently,” Ahmed Djoghlaf, executive secretary of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, told journalists.
Djoghlaf argued that extinction rates for some animal or plant species were at a historic high, up to 1,000 times those seen before, even affecting crops and livestock.

The International Whaling Commission has just unveiled a proposal to legalize commercial whale hunting for the first time in 24 years.
Now, countries are deciding whether to support it — or push back. Already, New Zealand’s Foreign Minister has described some provisions as “unacceptable,” “inflammatory,” and “offensive.”
A massive global outcry is needed now, as other key countries choose how to react. Avaaz will deliver this petition to the Commission delegates each time it adds another 100,000 signatures —Sign the petition and spread the word!
This year marks the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, when 20 million Americans flooded the streets and demanded environmental accountability from leaders in Washington.
Today is, once again, our chance to demand accountability from Congress for passing strong climate legislation that benefits all Americans.
Help us motivate Congress by signing this petition.
During The Climate Rally on April 25th, your name will appear in lights - all signers will be displayed to the crowd, and to Congress, in a visualization of the power behind America’s call for fair, ambitious and comprehensive climate legislation.
WHALES UNDER THREAT!
Within days, a proposal will be unveiled that could legalize commercial whale hunting for the first time in 24 years.
Once the proposal becomes public, member countries of the International Whaling Commission will make a decision to support it — or push back.
An outcry now — in the days and hours before these countries decide their positions — could stiffen the spines of those who want to protect whales by keeping whaling illegal. Avaaz has launched a last-moment petition which will be delivered to the delegates to the IWC every time we raise 100,000 signatures — sign here and forward this message
